I went outside to take a picture of the first snow of the year. Big fat snowflakes show up well on video. Then my dogs started trying to bite and catch the snowflakes. It was very cute IMO.

It makes no sense that two civilized countries like Germany and England were at war. 😢
If you are wondering why no prisoners were taken at Atakke, I would like to give you a little background information. I therefore recommend simply watching the film "The Sinking of Laconia", which is based on true facts that were also discussed in the "Nuremberg War Crimes Trials" so that you can better understand the reasons from today's perspective. Because war is not a solution to problems, no matter from which side you look at it... ruclips.net/video/7esQ9S46EJY/видео.html

At the 45 minute mark the young British soldier, Harry Town is Played by the actor who played Dolores Ed In Game of Thrones, who was John Snow's good friend at Castle, Black. Lots of good actors in this movie I'm surprised I've never seen it advertised before.
The actor who plays McDermott is the same actor who played one of the engineers in the titanic documentary/movie About the engineers who kept Titanic power and lights on until she sank. Great actor I wish he was in more.

More than 7,000 concentration camp survivors killed after the Royal Air Force erroneously bombed German prison ships carrying them in the Baltic Sea, were remembered with special prayers for the first time in 76 years since the tragedy happened. Described as “the worst friendly-fire incident in history”, SS Cap Arcona, alongside the Thielbek and Deutschland, came under attack and were ultimately sunk by RAF pilots on 3 May 1945 in the Bay of Lubeck, following intelligence that SS officers and senior Nazis were attempting to escape to Norway. Hartenstein was a Gentelmen!
The b24 crew are absolutely stupid the uboat was fulled with people and 4 lifeboats with a red cross flag and they decided to bomb it and even worce they missed and hit the survivers of the sunk ship just terrible
Yeah. In real life one of the bombs got a direct hit on one of the lifeboats and killed over 100 people.
I understand they weren't told of the incident on the uboat but, still a red cross over their deck gun to symbolise the Uboat wasn't hostile and still it was filled with passengers waving and shouting what were they thinking on that b24
unfortunately lot of stupid victor-propaganda. Not a bad tv-serie if it wasn't for that. All that crap wit the german woman is of course utter bullshit.
Yeah they made that part up. They had to remind everybody watching that the Germans were the bad guys who killed civilians for no reason and you had to sneak out of the country to avoid being murdered.
@@BrettonFerguson I believe Patton came to realize that they had fought the wrong enemy all along. Who defines "the germans" as the "bad guys" has been propagandized.

Does the film tell the truth about the ship carrying ammunition and war material as was proven once the wreck was located? Or about the full page ad the Germans took oit in the American newspapers warning that it would be targeted because of it's cargo? I don't want to waste time watching propaganda, too much of that in our daily lives already

Thank you for this rare film
Most interesting film. My uncle died on 7th December, 1942 when his ship, the Ceramic, was torpedoed by U 515. There were 655 passengers onboard and only one survived. The Ceramic was similar to the Laconia in size and tonnage.
I didn't know anybody in the navy. My grandpa had a friend who used to come over, he was in the US Army. He made it about 3 steps and got blown up on Omaha Beach and barely survived. He was covered in scars head to toe. I also had a friend whose dad was in the Hitler Youth and fought at Normandy and he had a bunch of scar and a glass eye. Then there was a Jewish couple who live up the road who were in a work camp in Germany and met when the war ended and they moved to America and got married. We all lived in the same area out in the country. They all lived within about a half mile of my house.
Very entertaining. The submarine used in the film is a type IXB while the U 156 was actually a type IXC.
What is the distinguishing feature you can tell them apart? I know the interior was filmed on a Type VII, but I think the exterior was a mock up. The exterior looks like a type IX to me, but I'm not an expert. I think the type VII was narrower in the bow.
how was that pilot not charged for his crimes?
Because America won the war. If America had lost he likely would have hung. Along with a lot of other Americans, English, and Soviets.
germany has gentlemen too madam
If the british would told the american that a german submarine rescued men, women and children and their orders were to locate and provide help.. I think that bomber would not have attacked
Probably, maybe. I think the British denied having received the uboat's transmission about the rescue. However I think they did receive it. They had stations and ships within range. I think they just said this to cover their a**es.
@@BrettonFerguson yeah war is hell dude
Dont pretend the massive red cross flag, the many life boats and the open radio transmission were invisible to the Americans... they knew perfectly well they were murdering civillians

What an awesome movie.
Swing music was not allowed nor was swing dancing in nazi germany
Officially yes. But people still had swing records. You just ran the risk of getting a knock on your door. But Uboat crews weren't going to get arrested. SubFact: Goebbels had a swing band comprised of KZ Inmates. They made music for Germany Calling English Broadcasts.
In passenger ship's disasters there's always a bitch of a mother on board like Rose's in Titanic
Nothing unusual here......americans always conducted cowardly attacks inspired by the brits who attacked Alboran island mistaken it for a U boat ...in the beggining of the "Atlantic War" both brits and yanks shat in their pants
Yes. Americans are always committing friendly fire incidents. They are so busy shitting their pants they shoot at everything and everyone. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_friendly_fire_incidents
The actress Lindsay Duncan who narrated this documentary also appeared in a movie of the sinking of the Laconia. Thank you for uploading these videos to your channel.
In the movie, she says to Hartenstein, "This is very kind of you, Captain. If you were English, you would be a gentleman", and Ken Duken, playing Hartenstein, replies, "Germany has gentlemen too, Madam". I like that scene very much.
@@mcz4909 I remember that scene and I also enjoyed it very much!

What a story! It illuminates the craziness of war, and how ordinary people are pitted against each other, although there is absolutely no reason for them to hate each other. And once in a while they acted accordingly. This story reminds me of the highly accomplished German fighter pilot Franz Stigler who went out of his way in order to escort and protect the crew of a badly damaged British bomber out of the air space which was under the control of the German air force. The pilot of the British plane - Charlie Brown - managed to fly his limping plane home without getting shot down. He needed to think about this incident for a while until he fully understood what had actually happened and what the German fighter pilot had done for his crew. Many decades after the end of WWII the two pilots managed to find each other. Both pilots had survived the war, and they had led a good post-war life. Stigler was full of joy when he learned that the surviving crew of the badly damaged British plane had indeed managed to get home. Both former pilots and their families became good friends until they died. Just like Franz Stigler who had shot down many planes during the war without feeling especially guilty about his success rate, the captain of the German submarine had done what he had been told to do. But when he realized how many people needed to be rescued he tried to do the right thing. It’s too bad that a chain of misunderstandings and a certain amount of thoughtlessness increased the body count considerably. Question: what about the US fighter pilots? Didn't they see the life boats full of people which were attached to the submarine??
Yes. They saw the red cross, the lifeboats full of people, and the deck of the uboat covered with people. They radioed this information back to base. Their superior officer back at the base replied ordering them to attack. There were actually two attacks on uboats. Another uboat, u-506, towing more lifeboats and deck covered in survivors. It had become separated from u-156 during the night. An American plane spotted it the next day and attacked. The bombs did not drop on the first run. It missed entirely the second run. The u-boat crash dived and escaped with no damage and to my knowledge no survivors were killed. I suspect it is possible the air crew the attack on second day may have intentionally missed. I think they were trying to obey orders but didn't want to hit a uboat covered with hundreds of British civilians.
Thanks for the detailed information about the aftermath of the Laconia's destruction. I also started to do some research, and apparently many persons who were involved in this incident and had to make important decisions, cannot be pidgeon-holed and sorted neatly into good-or-bad categories. I am German and my father, who 18 years old when the war ended, was a sailor and an engineer who designed ships. In this capacity he joined the West-German Navy in the 1960s. I think he would've done the same as Captain Hartenstein: as a soldier he would've followed orders, and he probably would not have worked actively against Hitler - but he would've also tried so save as many people as possible. He was lucky that he was too young for having to pursue his naval career during the Third Reich. Btw, I remember now that he has told me about the Laconia incident many years ago. As an avid sailor and a member of the West-German navy he would've been aware of the incident. He probably thought that Captain Hartenstein was a hero. I am not so sure. He didn't hesitate to torpedo the Laconia, and he torpedoed a few more ships before he died with his crew in his own submarine. But when he realized how many lives needed to be saved, he tried to do the right thing. That makes him very interesting indeed.
A sad chapter amoung many sadder. Perhaps a missed opportunity for things to have been done differently, but desperation took precedence?
Thanks so much for the upload.
My second cousin, three times removed (Cyril I. Pryor) was a RN stoker on board the Laconia. He died from exposure in lifeboat 2.
Do you know if he had the stroke before it was torpedoed, while it was sinking, or in the lifeboat? I'm just curious if maybe the stress of the situation, or lack of fresh water caused the stroke, or if it had happened before they were torpedoed. I don't remember the exact numbers, but lifeboat number 9 spent 4 weeks at sea. Started out with around 65 people onboard, and when it washed ashore in Liberia only had around 15.

Unbelievable what great minds Germany had. The design of those U-Boats were insane on it's complexity. Even now in 2023, watching one in the water is just so intimidating. The fact that the type VII and IX were so autonomous and could cover such great distance. Just breathtaking, almost beautiful but in a dark way. No one was safe in the ocean with those things. The English and the US were masters at finding ways to detect and destroy them. Sad such a high percentage of the German Navy didn't make it. War.
war is always damn hell
So...nobody is going to comment on the warcrime of bombing a vessel with survivors on board and waving a red cross flag, after having openly radioed their situation?
Meiner Meinung nach ein sehr guter Film und auch eine gute Geschichte die den alten Kameraden aus den U-Booten zu Recht zu steht. Heute ist es sehr einfach über alles zu urteilen..... Diese Männer haben großes geleistet......

Cool
The scene where the lady talks about losing her daughter and her husband, totally bummed me out.
I haven't watched this in awhile. But I think at the end when the French ship is picking up survivors from different groups of lifeboats scattered around, I think they pick up a group of survivors and one of them is her daughter. I could be mistaken and thinking of a different person who thought their family member were dead.
Yes Part 2 @1:17:48 She is kneeling on the deck of the French ship and you hear a voice "Mother...mother..." and it is her daughter she was convinced had died the entire time.
Seems to me it would have been better not to sink the ship in the first place. The captain had compassion at the end of the day. They weren't all the bad giuy. It's only right man, ya gotta give that Captain credit, when it's due...
Yes. Best case scenario, there wouldn't have been a war in the first place. Doing his job sinking British ships, he tried to do what was right for the people.
Bad volume
The volume usually is fine. It has been up for years and I've only ever had two other comments about the volume. They said it was very quiet and they were unable to turn it up louder. I think it was their set up. One it was something like their computer and browser in combination with them having mono speakers. They reloaded it and tried it on a different computer and it worked fine.
